CHAPTER 24

Los Picos de Europa, Northern Spain.

Isaac looked away from the computer monitor, his eyes burning as he struggled to make sense of everything he had just learned. He scanned the room, still amazed by its uniqueness. Comprised entirely of abandoned furniture, the decor resembled that of a nineteenth century bed chamber, complete with hanging veils, glowing oil lamps, and a blazing silver candelabra. At his feet he could see Shackleton lying fast asleep on the tattered rug.

After having bathed and eaten, Isaac settled happily into his new accommodations, dressed in the warm flannel pyjamas he had been given. It was the first bit of civilization he had seen in weeks, and the fact that their strange suite resided in a medieval dungeon made no difference to him whatsoever. The bath had been heavenly, and the warm and hearty food rejuvenating. To his utter delight, he had found a computer in the room, complete with an internet connection. He had wasted no time in sitting down before it.

After informing himself of the dreadful events occurring around the world, Isaac had managed to gain access to the church’s orphanage database, his old password surprisingly still active.

“Incredible,” he whispered, his eyes scanning the text.

He could clearly see that Gabriel and Natasha had indeed been born on the same day and hour as his own son, and like his son, they too had both been in rare coma vigils at the time. Further investigation confirmed that one month after their births, Gabriel and Natasha had both awoken in demonically possessed states. Accounts of their adoptive parents were mentioned as well. Professor Agardi Metrovich was named as Gabriel’s adoptive father, and Father Franco as Natasha’s legal guardian.

Isaac produced the old priest’s diary. There was one more question he needed answered. He flipped through the book until he had found the entry that spoke of the Rex Angelus Monastery that they would have been visiting after the burial of his son. He did an internet search on the name. What he found left him dumbfounded.

Rex Angelus was the name of a secret aristocratic bloodline made up of powerful leaders and nobility. According to the article he was reading, it was woven directly into the fabric of European history. Isaac had always been a loyal Roman Catholic, but if this information was true it would forever change the way he viewed the church. According to the author, the Rex Angelus bloodline descended directly from Jesus Christ. They were the keepers of what was being referred to as the Original Teachings of the Kristos; something that the Vatican had gone through great pains to wipe from existence. The Rex Angelus families had purportedly kept these teachings a secret, privately practicing the initiatory rights handed down to them from their ancestors, while maintaining an outward appearance of religious conformity.

Isaac bent closer to the monitor. A video was playing itself out on YouTube. In it, a distinguished British historian was being interviewed, his elbow propped casually on a bookshelf as he spoke.
